Franz Liszt is widely considered to be the greatest pianist in history; in his time he was accused of selling his soul to master piano technique thought to be intractable. His pieces are famous for his multi-octave jumps and thematic transformations. The Mahjong scene from Crazy Rich Asians (2018) EXPLANATION: This scene is the climax of the movie, where Rachel (Constance Wu) squares off against Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) over Nick (Henry Golding). The rules of Mahjong are similar to Poker and "Go Fish" where a player tries to make a winning hand from drawing a tile or consuming someone else's discard tile. Its a battle of chinese and american culture and beliefs, thats all there is to it. Nick's mother has done nothing wrong. She was only out to protect nick's future. She wanted the best for nick. Rachel on the other hand has an american mindset where one is free to choose anything that will bring her happiness. So its a clash of culture. Neither is wrong nor right. Situations like this is typical when a chinese or korean or japanese wants to marry someone who is not the same nationality as them. Hence, the hokkien phrase Kai Ki Lang, marry our own to preserve the culture and traditions.

    In the opening sequence, rachel didnt stand up when michelle yeoh's character walked in. Showed rachel as a true ABC, ignorant of asian tradition. No matter how angry you are with a person but if that person who is a senior to you, you must stand up. That is negative reflection on rachel's character

    This movie to me she was doomed from the start, she only had Astrid and a handful that liked her. She never asked for the wealth, she just wanted a holiday but it was basically a nightmare imo. To me it gets to such point,normally there’s no chance of a relationship especially when she was betrayed being spied upon on her background.

    To all the Western girls that end up falling for an Eastern man, we know that you are a unique girl exceptional to be honest, but back home there is a woman waiting for that boy child, having that man in her life may have been one and only reward for her existence because she gave birth to a male child. Please don't break Eastern homes for your maddening love. You can have another man after divorce or breakup but his mother won't find another son. Love to you for being so amazing, honest, unique and exceptional, that boy child is a reward, prize for an Easterner mother generally,her only reward and a very big one! . A humble request from an Easterner here..

  • @SlyWithMee

    I imagine if Nick due to his maddening love for Rachel could have one day schemed to kill (aka remove her family) Rachel's family - which was just one person - her mother. Which he didn't do proving he could have changed stands easily. Families in general don't support love relationships specially in Eastern cultures. I think what Rachel did was good. I don't recall the end (watched in 2022 on Amazon Prime) but in the scene she said she made her decision and left him for his family. She didn't want him to lose his mother once more. That was sentimental. Mothers are generally very close to their boy kid in eastern cultures. Nick was one such boy for sure..Also,a girlfriend or lover or wife can be replaced- there is always another one after divorce or breakup, but a mother can't be replaced

      Imagine when a daughter said that for her mother even though she wasn't so perfect according to perfect standards of a mother? That's love. Rachel was protecting her mother even if she did wrong in the past. I felt wow at that. But I for some reason can't let go of the fact that Abraham was ready to sacrifice his son when God asked him to, why would God test anyone like that? As if God was a maniacal and not a well wisher? Why to test anyone so much? There is a right thing and there is a wrong thing. Human sacrifice can never be right.

      @@SlyWithMee Hm, yeah, agree there is a lot in the Old Testament that is not easy to digest... Job is also a painful read :( David in the psalms too, his words inspire me daily, but it's difficult to read him asking that God bring him justice by vanquishing his enemies. Different times. The Old Testament shows a righteous God, whose wrath is an important part of the equation. Obedience was encouraged as a sign of respect/acknowledgment for God as the ultimate, and only true, authority figure. I'm grateful for the example Jesus makes of God's mercy and compassion - that's the new covenant Christians are under. <3

    • @SlyWithMee
      @SlyWithMee 23 дня назад

      @@MadelMac God's wrath, I don't think such a thing exists. He was with David despite his failings. I think biggest sinner of Old Testament was David himself. What a lewd character. He didn't think twice to sleep with the wife of a soldier who was fighting for his kingdom. He then got him killed too. That was heights of lewdness and perversion to me. He was chosen for the exact reason - he was the kind of sinner God liked. That is why I said - God feels more maniacal than sensible. Right and wrong loses its meaning when we work according to God because it is His choice and that doesn't look right to me. If I could I would leave religion but I can't. I have nothing else to go to. That is what it is - a quandary- an unending loop- no wonder they called it eternity or infinity. There is no way out of that kind of religion where a God tortures His own people and picks special sinners and worked according to His choices caring little about right and wrong. I like Desmond Tutu's lines - When I do good I feel good when I do bad I feel bad and that is my religion. It doesn't have to be Christianity then. I really get a sense of maniacal person with the God represented in OT specially. Which as a matter of fact many people around the world still think as Christianity. While OT is not Christianity. Although I don't believe (now) Jesus's story either. It was an indirect way to abuse a woman for life - Mary. She became the symbol of some woman who would be remembered how God handpicked her and gave her a baby not even out of amazing sex rather just holy spirit and then made her take care of such a boy who was hardly into family matters rather busy doing the work of maniacal God..I think I don't feel comfortable with any of that anymore. I miss my Jesus though..I had memories with him as a child which too got spoilt because I think it is a tech America deploys on kids of developing countries to use them later..

      @@MadelMac I have lost my faith. If that is a sign of 2nd coming of Christ..I don't think that is happening. Christ won't come this time. He is not going to come. Only thing that will happen is earth will lose gravity for some reason and we all will be pulled up in space. Some will escape as they may have homes or crafts in space but a lot of us will simply get sucked in space due to loss of gravity. When that will happen will depend on how many natural disasters will strike the earth making the core of earth weak eventually. I can't tell if I really will be able to get my Jesus back again even though I am not religious and don't want to do religion...but I really think it was all fake. I have lost my faith.

    They could've made Rachel's hand reveal just a BIT more dramatic if she had West instead of North winds - 4:11 XD Also, Rachel draws her own winning tile before passing it to Eleanor. In mahjong that's called "zi mo", which yields a bonus for winning on your own. That may be a reference to her and her mom's self-made immigrant journey.

    A good way to visualise the game's outcome with a comparison is in a game of chess. You have a mate in 1, but you move your piece such that you force the opponent to checkmate yourself and lose the game. Your opponent won knowing you gave him the win, and they had no other options other than to win the game. This is without the symbolism behind the mahjong pieces, rules and even directions.

    I'm Confused a bit what did Rachel mean when she said I know Nick told you the truth about my mom so did Nick already did a background check on her? And also does that mean Nick knew the whole time and didn't say anything to Rachel?

    • @SlyWithMee
      @SlyWithMee Месяц назад

      That means Nick and Rachel didn't know each other well before introducing their families. Ideally both should have known the weaknesses of others family well before trying to create a bond between two separate important entities. If family wasn't important for Nick, he would not have tried to introduce Rachel to his family. He and Rachel could have tied the knot in America itself and Nick would not have let anyone know about it. Men do that-have a wife in local country and a wife cum girlfriend in America thinking America allowed everything "love". This is a movie and a nice one. Amazing starcast and lovely performances. Sentimental scenes. And sure as two educated people would do to reduce complications- the story writer missed on that key point to make it dramatic. No point in marrying of you love your family as well as you love the one who is not loved or respected by your family. Eventually everything will fall apart.

    • @SlyWithMee
      @SlyWithMee Месяц назад

      Quite possible that Nick took Rachel to meet his family because of his family name and he not wanting to spoil it due to just some girl. He probably had confidence that Rachel would be liked by his family. She was smart, independent; only problem was her family status and background which I am not sure if and why Nick didn't know about earlier. I don't recall movie now, I watched in 2022. People may taint such a big and rich family due to Rachel's not so good family (in terms of status). Plus as Nick's mother spoke - Americans cared only for their happiness - she might have been right. But food point was Nick took wanted that kind of lifestyle that was why he chose Rachel and not another girl from his own family background or similar to his status..or another lovely girl from their own ancestral village or town who would bind everyone together.
